An honest look at Wippy as a Canopy alternative
Canopy is a strong, modular practice-management platform — and it owns one capability nobody else in this market has: IRS transcripts and notices. If IRS representation work is the core of your practice, Canopy deserves a serious look, and this page says so up front.
Wippy's case is the everyday tax workflow: flat pricing instead of module math, deep time & billing, a board that stays in sync with your professional tax software, and AI that runs on your firm's own key.
Where Canopy genuinely wins
- IRS transcripts and notices — unique in this market. If IRS representation work is core to your practice, Canopy's transcripts module alone can justify the platform; Wippy has nothing like it.
- AI document intake — Smart Intake's request lists plus file recognition and renaming are genuinely strong, and Canopy shipped AI-assisted 1040 preparation and a full workflow-automation launch in 2026.
- Module flexibility — you can buy only the pieces you want (the flip side is the pricing math below).
- Established vendor: large review base, SOC 2 attestation, guided onboarding.
Where Wippy wins
- Flat, predictable pricing — one price with everything in Pro, versus a platform base fee plus per-user, per-module math that public reviews repeatedly describe as hard to predict.
- Time & billing depth — reviewers cite time tracking as one of Canopy's weaker areas; it is one of Wippy's strongest (15-minute grid, invoicing, payment links, reminder cadences, autopay).
- A real free tier — start at $0 forever; Canopy has no free tier.
- No payment-processing markup — invoices run through your firm's own Stripe account at Stripe's standard rates.
- Live tax-software sync — a desktop agent keeps return statuses on your board in sync with your professional tax software automatically.
- AI data governance — every AI feature runs on your firm's own API key, under your own provider agreement.

Straight talk: Canopy's Starter tier has a lower sticker than Wippy Pro — if four seats and the Starter feature set cover your practice, Canopy is genuinely cheaper, and this page will not pretend otherwise. The comparison changes at comparable feature depth and again at five or more users, where Canopy switches to a platform base fee plus per-user, per-module pricing. Wippy stays one flat number the whole way — and keeps a free tier underneath it.
What we never charge for
The only thing Wippy bills is seats. Everything below is free at every tier — verified against how our billing actually works, not a marketing promise.
No per-client pricing
Unlimited client and entity records on every plan, including Free. Your client list growing is not a billing event.
No per-envelope e-signature fees
Engagement letter and federal e-file authorization signatures are included. There is no envelope counter anywhere in the product.
No client portal seat fees
Every client gets portal access for document upload, return status, and secure messaging — on the Free plan too.
No payment-processing markup
Invoices are paid through your firm's own Stripe account at Stripe's standard rates. Wippy adds nothing on top.
No onboarding or implementation fees
There is no paid setup package — because there is no six-week setup. Import your client list and start working.
No exit fee, no data hostage
A full export of your firm's data is built into the product on every tier. If Wippy stops earning your business, your data leaves with you.
Your AI runs on your key — not through ours
Every AI feature in Wippy runs on your firm's own API key (bring your own key). Your client documents and questions travel directly to the AI provider under youragreement with them — never pooled through a Wippy-owned account — and we never charge per AI call. When a client asks where their data goes, you can name the exact provider, because you chose it and you hold the agreement. Of the platforms we reviewed in July 2026, none offers this: their AI routes through the vendor's own provider accounts.
You also see the real cost directly: the AI bill arrives from your provider, not marked up inside a subscription. In our July 2026 modeling at current entry-level model prices, a typical small firm's monthly provider bill lands in the single digits of dollars.
On security, honesty first: Wippy does not yet hold a SOC 2 attestation. What it does have, on every plan: AES-256 encryption of sensitive fields and files at rest, TLS in transit, two-factor authentication, virus scanning on every upload, and an append-only audit trail.
Built by a CPA who runs his own firm on it
Wippy is built by Sam Richison, a practicing CPA. He built it because the practice-management tools he evaluated either wanted a year's payment up front, needed weeks of setup before they earned anything, or treated tax work as just another project template. He runs his own practice on Wippy every working day — the time grid he bills from, the return board he checks each morning, and the deadline calendar he trusts during filing season are the same ones you get.
That cuts both ways, and we would rather say so than have you discover it: Wippy is a small vendor. You will not get a sales team or an account manager. You will get software maintained by the person who depends on it during busy season, straightforward answers, and a full data export on every tier so that staying is always a choice — never a trap.
